Sir Alex Ferguson's ex-right-hand man pinpoints key'evidence'for what went wrong for Man Utd in 2024/25 season,'proof'clear as day for him

Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has revealed his unfiltered assessment of the Red Devils’ Premier League struggles in the 2024-25 season.

The Red Devils’ form fell off a cliff in the Premier League last season and Manchester United managed only a 15th-place finish during the campaign at Old Trafford.

United’s league standing in the 2024-25 season is the Red Devils’ worst finish in the history of the Premier League era, with the club facing an uphill task ahead of them.

Ruben Amorim took over as United manager during the 2024-25 Premier League campaign after Erik ten Hag was sacked as Red Devils head coach last October.

The 40-year-old United boss, who arrived from Sporting CP last November, struggled to turn the ship around for the Red Devils in the Premier League season.

United did reach the Europa League final under Ruben Amorim in May, but the Red Devils lost 1-0 to Spurs at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao.

What Mike Phelan noticed from Man Utd’s 2024-25 Premier League season under Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford

Manchester United will be without European football for the 2025-26 campaign at Old Trafford and Ruben Amorim has a massive challenge ahead of him at the club.

The Red Devils’ last hope of securing a place in Europe was shattered after United’s Europa League final defeat to fellow Premier League side Tottenham.

Amorim also fell short of lifting his first piece of major silverware as United manager in May after he replaced Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout in 2024.

Mike Phelan, who was assistant manager under both Sir Alex Ferguson and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, dropped his verdict on United’s lacklustre Premier League season.

“The evidence is there, the proof is in the pudding,” he told The Straits Times.

“There are a few players there, they’ve been there a long time now, and it really hasn’t progressed for different reasons.”

Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd first-team squad rebuild is underway at Old Trafford ahead of the 2025-26 Premier League season

Amorim is in the process of overhauling his United first-team squad in the summer transfer window after a woeful season for the Red Devils at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils wasted no time in the transfer market and United completed their signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves for a £62.5m transfer fee in June.

United are also linked with several other players in the window, including Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo and Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The Red Devils are expected to see departures from Old Trafford and the likes of Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof will leave once their contracts expire on 30th June.
