Blow for Slot: Reds hero who“screams Liverpool”now“wants”to seal move away

Liverpool legend Andy Robertson “wants” to complete a move to Atletico Madrid this summer, according to former scout Mick Brown.

The 31-year-old has enjoyed eight fantastic seasons at Anfield, proving to be one of the leading left-backs of his generation across Europe.

Robertson showed signs of being past his best last season, however, and with Milos Kerkez set to come in from Bournemouth, his playing time could become more limited.

Having been strongly linked with a switch to Atletico, Brown has now told Football Insider that the Scotland captain “wants” to move there:

“Well they’ve been looking to replace Robertson. I think Kerkez is a top-class option, he’ll go to Liverpool and start every week. So that opens the door for Robertson to leave and there’s going to be a fair bit of interest, because a few Premier League clubs had considered a move.

“He’s very much now a Liverpool player in that he’s really bought into the club. He’s got that connection with the fans and the club, and I can’t see him wanting to go and play for another Premier League side at this stage. From what I hear, he wants to make that move to Atletico Madrid. There’s interest there and Liverpool are willing to let him go, so it’s one to watch.”

Losing Robertson a clear blow for Slot

While Robertson arguably shouldn’t be a regular starter for Liverpool moving forward, seeing him stay on as an excellent squad player would be the ideal outcome for Arne Slot.

Instead, it looks increasingly as though the Scot’s head has been turned by Atletico, with the veteran full-back perhaps wanting one more big challenge in his career.

Robertson may not quite be the force he once was, but having him around is far more beneficial than losing him, with Jurgen Klopp rightly saying that he “screams Liverpool” in terms of his understanding of the values of both the club and the city.

As things stand, it looks as though he may have played his final game for Liverpool – if that is the case, Kostas Tsimikas will need to be retained, or another left-back will be required, should the Greek also move on.
