Tino Livramento on England U21 role: ‘I see it as a privilege’

Tino Livramento is making the most of his first England tournament experience, starring for the Under-21 side after a standout year at Newcastle United.

Livramento was left out of England’s senior squad for June friendlies, with manager Thomas Tuchel instead encouraging him to take on a leadership role at the U21 European Championship.

Speaking ahead of England’s second group stage match against Slovenia, the full-back said the opportunity is one he values highly.

“I see it as a privilege [to be asked to be a leader for the Under 21s in this tournament],” Livramento said. “Thomas Tuchel obviously spoke to me about the senior squad and said that he wanted to speak to Lee [Carsley] as well about giving me that role.”

Livramento added that his participation is particularly meaningful after repeated setbacks.

“I’ve never played a tournament for England at any age group. I’ve always missed through injuries. I think that’s a big thing for me, coming here, getting this experience and playing with loads of boys that I’ve come through the age groups with,” Livramento said.

The 21-year-old was named man of the match in England’s 3-1 opening win over the Czech Republic, notching an assist and impressing with his pace and composure. England U21 coach Lee Carsley praised Livramento’s contributions, noting the broader benefit.

“It’s his first tournament for England and we believe that if we can have success in these tournaments with these experiences, it’s going to help the seniors in the long term,” Carsley said. “But that’s got to be his goal, playing in the senior team. He’s definitely got the capabilities to do.”
