Liverpool Owners FSG Eyeing To Buy Spanish Club Getafe

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owners of Liverpool, reportedly want to acquire La Liga side Getafe as part of their long-term expansion strategy.

FSG’s Multi-Club Dream Gains Momentum

The return of Michael Edwards to FSG as Director of Football shows more than just a Liverpool rebuild. Edwards, alongside new sporting director Richard Hughes, was brought back with a bigger plan. They are aiming to build a global football network with the Reds at the top.

Early talk linked FSG to clubs in Brazil, Málaga, and later Bordeaux. But, none of those deals took shape. Now, fresh buzz from reliable sources in England and Spain suggests that FSG are targeting Getafe.

The Spanish club ended the last campaign at 13th in La Liga. It shares similarities with Liverpool during the early FSG days. This comes especially after the fans are showing frustration toward current owner Ángel Torres.

Why Getafe Raises Eyebrows Among Liverpool Fans

Getafe have some prior moment in history including two Europa League appearances, two Copa del Rey finals back-to-back losses in the late 2000s. But, they have also had some controversies. The club welcomed Mason Greenwood in 2023 despite his troubled past and there was backlash. Their supporters have also been involved in several instances of racism. That includes abuse directed towards Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. and Sevilla’s Marcos Acuña. That instance resulted in jail terms and stadium bans.

On the pitch, the Spanish side plays with a more defensive and dull style than attacking flair. Given that, that is not exactly Liverpool’s attacking identity. With so many red flags, even the Reds’ supporters who support the multi-club model could be questioning this move.

Still, for FSG, it’s a strategic step toward building a wider football empire. This one could help support and supply talent to Anfield in the long run.
