Former Manchester United player Angel Gomes has settled for his third-choice destination in Ligue 1 club Marseille.
Gomes is expected to complete a transfer to the Ligue 1 runners up in the coming weeks after his contract with Lille expires.
The 24-year-old changed agencies earlier this year and Gomes had his heart set on a move to Barcelona after five years with Lille. If that was not to materialise, Gomes was confident of moving to a top-half Premier League side.
Instead, Gomes is set to remain in France and head south to Marseille, who qualified for the Champions League under former Brighton coach Roberto de Zerbi.
Gomes will reunite with former United teammate Mason Greenwood at the 1993 European Cup winners. Greenwood ended last season as the joint-top scorer in Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain talisman Ousmane Dembele on 21 goals.
England international Gomes received his maiden call-up to the national team squad during Lee Carsley's interim tenure in charge in September and was named in all three of his squads. Carsley coached Gomes at under 21 level but the midfielder was excluded from Thomas Tuchel's first two squads in March and June.
Gomes left United on a free in 2020 after he rejected their offer of a new contract. Gomes made his debut aged 16 years and 263 days under Jose Mourinho in May 2017 but went on to make only nine more appearances for his boyhood club.
Former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took a dim view of Gomes's contract wranglings in 2020 and omitted him from the matchday squad against LASK Linz in the Europa League. Gomes was the only outfield player who travelled to Austria and was omitted from the matchday squad and he spent his final five months out of the first-team fold amid uncertainty over his future.
Gomes became the fourth-youngest United player at the age of 16 years and 263 days against Crystal Palace in May 2017. He has made one start in the last seven months and his representatives failed with a desperate attempt to secure a loan move to a Premier League club on deadline day in January 2020.
