Man United academy director Nick Cox has agreed a deal to become Everton’s new technical director, sources have told Football Insider.

The 47-year-old is set to start work with the Toffees next week as his Old Trafford exit is finalised.

Cox has been with Man United since June 2016, having previously worked in similar roles at Watford and Sheffield United.

The Englishman is now set to step up into the technical director role at Everton as the club embark on a backroom rebuild ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

Everton agree deal for Man United senior man

Cox oversaw the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, Harry Amass and more as they progressed through United’s academy into the first team.

He will now take on a broader and more senior role at the Hill Dickinson Stadium as part of CEO Angus Kinnear’s new-look team.

The move for Cox comes after the departure of former director of football Kevin Thelwell to Rangers, where he was joined by head of recruitment Dan Purdy.

Everton have already kicked off their transfer business in the summer window, bringing Carlos Alcaraz to the club on a permanent basis following a successful loan in the 2024-25 campaign.

The Friedkin Group are expected to bankroll more signings for David Moyes‘ side in the remainder of the window as the club make the highly-anticipated move into their new stadium.

Everton could agree £35m striker deal

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (14 June) that Everton have been told a £35million offer for Villarreal striker Thierno Barry will be accepted as they plan to make a big-money offer.

Barry, 22, has been identified as a key target for the Toffees as they prepare for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to leave the club upon the expiry of his contract.

He moved to Villarreal from Basel just last summer (2024) and his contract is set to run until 2029, meaning the La Liga club are under no pressure to sell.
