Premier League fixtures: Boxing Day tradition cancelled, plus Arsenal’s nightmare start

The Premier League has scrapped the traditional Boxing Day calendar for the upcoming season after calls to reduce the workload of the top players.

Publication of the fixtures for the 2025-26 campaign did not include a single Boxing Day match, although that is certain to change once broadcasters make their selections before the festive period.

However, no side will be expected to play twice within a 48-hour period as has generally been the case, meaning that the established, packed Boxing Day list is gone.

A Premier League statement said: “In keeping with our commitment to providing a greater rest period over the Christmas and New Year period, no club will be requested to play less than 48 hours between match rounds 18 and 19 (December 27 and December 30). Matches in Round 18 (December 27) are available for movement to Boxing Day for live broadcast selection. Each club has a home match on either December 27 or January 3, with travel reduced on December 27 and December 30.”

The top managers have long complained about the demands in December and early January, which have been exacerbated by the revised European schedule.

Arsenal’s nightmare start

Arsenal face a daunting start to their bid to end a 22-year wait to win the Premier League as they face four of the biggest tests of the season in their opening six fixtures.

Mikel Arteta’s side will travel to Anfield, Old Trafford and St James’ Park before the end of September as well as hosting Manchester City. They will also meet last season’s surprise package Nottingham Forest early on.

Arsenal’s opening-day trip to Old Trafford for a televised, 4.30pm kick-off on Sunday, August 17 is the marquee fixture when the Premier League returns, with Ruben Amorim’s summer rebuild of United put to an immediate, stern test.

Champions Liverpool will kick off the new season with an 8pm Friday Anfield kick-off against Bournemouth, while Thomas Frank’s first league game as Spurs manager will be a home match against promoted Burnley.

Newcastle and Sunderland will play the first Premier League Tyne-Wear derby since 2016 at the Stadium of Light in mid-December, while the first top-flight game at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium will be the second match day: a 3pm kick-off against Brighton and Hove Albion on August 23.

The games selected for television on the opening weekend are Liverpool v Bournemouth (Friday, August 15, 8pm), Aston Villa v Newcastle United (Saturday, August 16, 12.30pm), Wolverhampton Wanderers v Manchester City (Saturday, August 16, 5.30pm), Chelsea v Crystal Palace (Sunday, August 17, 2pm), Manchester United v Arsenal (Sunday, August 17, 4.30pm) and Leeds United v Everton (Monday, August 18, 8pm).

Arsenal’s key fixtures

There is no getting away from it. Mikel Arteta’s side face the start from hell with trips to Anfield, Old Trafford and St James’ Park immediately on the agenda, in addition to Pep Guardiola’s visit to the Emirates on September 20 – just after the first European commitment of the season. Back-to-back meetings with Spurs and Chelsea in November, replicated in February, have a pivotal look about them, too.

On the plus side, should Arsenal go the distance in the title run-in they will look at their final 10 games with more optimism. Of those, only two of Arsenal’s opponents (Manchester City and Newcastle) finished in the top seven last season, while six were in the bottom half. If Arsenal navigate their way through their most demanding phases of the season, they will be full of confidence beyond April.

Chelsea’s key fixtures

Like Pep Guardiola, Enzo Maresca wanted a relaxing start to the season given his players need recovery after Fifa’s unloved Club World Cup. An opening-day match against FA Cup holders Crystal Palace is hardly an easy starter, but Chelsea will only leave London once before October 18, so his players can at least be thankful of home comforts as they build their way into the new campaign.

Liverpool’s key fixtures

An early trip to Newcastle followed by the visit of Arsenal will alert Arne Slot that his champions must hit the ground running, but unlike last season there are no clusters of fixtures against presumed title rivals. The Dutch coach will be studying the Premier League dates alongside the Champions League schedule, however, and praying for a favourable European draw.

The first Merseyside derby at Anfield on September 20 follows the first round of Champions League fixtures. Significantly, Liverpool will travel to Chelsea, Brentford, Manchester City, West Ham United and Bournemouth immediately following European rounds. They also host Brighton and Newcastle at the end of a Champions League week, while if they reach the quarter-finals, a huge European night will precede Liverpool’s first trip to Everton’s new stadium on the weekend of April 18, 2026.

Looking ahead, mid-January to early February looks especially challenging as City travel to Old Trafford, the Tottenham Stadium and Anfield, those rounds of games following the last match of the Champions League league phase. City will be eager to avoid the pressures of last season when they had to fight to make the play-off rounds, complicating their league form.

In the run-in, trips to Chelsea and Everton, as well as home games with Arsenal and Aston Villa, will give rivals hope that points will be dropped.

Erik ten Hag did not make it to the end of October after an horrendous start last season. His successor Ruben Amorim will be thrilled if United are in the European spots at the same stage as United face Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool in the first couple of months. Given United’s form last year, there may be as much anxiety about the visits of newly promoted Burnley and Sunderland during the same period. The first Manchester derby is at the Etihad on September 13 with the return at Old Trafford in January.

Newcastle’s key fixtures

For all those who love North-East football, the first Premier League Tyne-Wear derby since 2016 will take place on the weekend of December 13. Eddie Howe’s side have a tough start to the campaign, however, with top-four rivals Aston Villa awaiting on day one, before a rerun of last season’s Carabao Cup final gives Newcastle a chance to establish their Premier League title credentials early. That has the potential to be a statement performance against Liverpool in week two.

Howe will be conditioning his squad for a difficult festive period, however, with Chelsea and Manchester United waiting in December after that first, emotional local derby.

The Thomas Frank era will begin against Burnley before the toughest of away days at Manchester City. Frank will have to wait a while for his first taste of the north London derby, his side travelling to the Emirates on November 22 in the midst of an especially demanding spell when his team also faces Villa, Everton, Manchester United and Newcastle before an emotional reunion with Brentford in early December. Frank will be back at his own stomping ground just three weeks later as the return game at the Gtech Community Stadium is on December 30.
