Mateo Joseph looks destined to leave Leeds United this summer.

The young Spanish striker has been linked with a move away from Elland Road. It seems as if it’s only a question of when he’ll leave and where he’ll end up.

Joseph struggled to break into the Leeds team toward the back end of last season, instead playing the role of backup to Joel Piroe.

The Spaniard believes in his ability and wants to play more of a starring role elsewhere.

However, Leeds still have time to decide to be selfish and keep Joseph around as a squad player for the upcoming season.

Birmingham join race to sign Joseph

Joseph has been heavily linked with Real Betis this summer.

However, according to GiveMeSport (17 June) Championship heavyweights Birmingham City have now joined the race to sign the Spain Under-21 star.

Mega-rich Birmingham have money to throw around in the transfer window this summer, and could promise Joseph more of a prominent role in their team, although the report adds a deal won’t be easy.

It remains unclear whether Joseph would fancy a transfer to Birmingham or if he has his heart set on Seville.

Either way, this new competition for this signature could speed up the Spaniard’s departure.

Leeds should consider keeping Joseph around as a squad player

The Leeds hierarchy are developing a habit of selling young players for maximum profit.

The departures of Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville are evidence of that.

It’s an efficient way to run a football club, of course. Far removed from the financial mismanagement that sent Leeds spiralling from the top divisions in the mid-2000s.

Still, in the case of Joseph, this could be a player worth keeping for at least one more season.

A big squad is needed in modern-day football. Joseph will likely get a chance to shine if he stays at Leeds.

He is still just 21 years old. His best years are ahead of him. If he shows glimpses of what he can do in the Premier League, he could force himself into the starting XI.

Or, at the very least, he could send his transfer value rocketing further, ready to be sold for a higher fee next summer.
