Celtics role player could get big money, but not from Boston

Celtics center Luke Kornet is expected to land a big-money deal in free agency if he leaves Boston.

The Boston Celtics are expected to undergo major roster changes heading into the 2025–26 season, largely due to financial constraints.

One of the biggest moves on the horizon is the likely trade of Kristaps Porzingis, which would leave the team searching for a new starting center.

Luke Kornet could be a candidate to fill that role—if he remains in Boston. While he's also considered a trade candidate, moving elsewhere could benefit him financially.

"Kornet is expected to earn a substantial pay raise and have a robust market this summer among various teams who have the non-taxpayer mid-level exception to spend," Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported.

Kornet will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, adding another layer of uncertainty. As the Celtics try to get under the second tax apron, they may not have the flexibility to re-sign him.

This past season, Kornet played in 73 games for Boston, making 16 starts. He averaged 6.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 18.6 minutes per game.
