At the height of their powers, 94.1 WIP was Philadelphia's top sports talk show for years.
They still carry ratings as the top dog in the city, but things have changed. The network is no longer focused on creating interesting sports conversations. It simply wants to say whatever it can to provoke public outrage.
Public outrage, you see, increases viewership.
The reality of that situation hit home this past week, and ever since, the Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl LIX. For most flagship stations, the few months following the victory would produce a love letter to the organization and the fans.
Finally, the team accomplished a goal that was special in an all-time way.
That didn't happen, though. Not even 24 hours after the game, the radio station debated Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts' legacy as the team's starting quarterback.
Seriously. That actually happened.
Four months later, WIP is back at it again, ranking the city's top-11 athletes right now. Whether one host left Hurts off the list entirely or another questioned whether the quarterback had a good or great year, WIP continued to show that it has no intention of celebrating a Super Bowl team.
Or, even being reasonable in evaluating the champs.
It's further evidence that while the Eagles winning the Super Bowl was terrific for the fans and the city itself, maybe it was terrible for WIP.
Why?
They are determined build their audience off of the fans’ disappointment and frustration.
But…
What would you be frustrated by in a 40-22 Super Bowl win?
Bottom line: It is clear that the guys on the radio station don't know how to talk about the Eagles anymore.
And so…they have resorted to throwing ear-grabbing takes against the wall hoping the negativity sticks.
