Two rounds of the group stage of the U19 European Championship in Romania have been played. So far, the tournament has lived up to expectations. There have been a number of dramatic matches. Fantastic talents have unfolded on a major European football stage.
In Group A, Spain is ready for the semi-finals. The Spaniards, as one of the pre-favourites, have so far fulfilled their promise. They have achieved two wins out of two possible, against Montenegro and Denmark. The battle for second place in Group A, and advancement to the semi-finals, is wide open. Both Romania and Denmark have three points. The teams will meet in the last and decisive group stage match. It will take place in Bucharest on Thursday.
In Group B, the Netherlands have impressed greatly. They have won both their matches. They defeated England with a score of 3-0 and Norway with 2-0. But also in this group, the battle for second place is wide open. England are in second place with two points. They drew 2-2 with Norway and 5-5 with Germany in a crazy football match on Tuesday. Germany led 5-1 at half-time in that game. However, England impressively fought back and salvaged a point with four goals in the second half.
England face the Netherlands in their final group game. In the second game in Group B, Germany and Norway meet. Both teams have one point so far. If Germany or Norway win the game, the winning team will most likely advance. This is provided that England does not win its match against the Netherlands. If there is a draw in the match between Germany and Norway, Norway will advance. This happens if England loses by three goals or more to the Netherlands.
The Norwegian team is strong with an impressive defensive game. However, they have struggled offensively. Against the Netherlands, the Norwegian talents produced several great chances, but without getting the ball in the goal. On the other hand, a strong Dutch team scored. As a result, Peter van der Veen’s team was able to celebrate advancement to the semi-finals. There, the Dutch will most likely meet the home team Romania or Denmark.
For Norway, hope is still alive, but hope depends on help from the Netherlands. But the Norwegians can get that help quickly. The Netherlands delivered impressive performances in the European Championship. Because of this, no one will be surprised if England also has a tough time against De Oranje.

This opportunity is still alive. We still have hope for a place in the semi-finals before the last match in the group stage. Now we must shake off this disappointment and reinforce what was good. What we have done well in the first two matches, we must do very well against Germany. We definitely have a chance in that match, said national team coach Even Sel to fotball.no after the loss against the Netherlands in Ploiesti.
Norway’s captain Daniel Gjerde Sætren was also conditionally optimistic after the loss against the Netherlands. The match could have gone either way, but when the Netherlands scored the first goal, it became difficult for us. But this is by no means over. We will do everything we can to beat Germany in the last match. We aim to advance to the semi-finals, concluded an optimistic Norwegian captain. The excitement and drama are very much alive. This is before the last round of the group stage in the U19 European Championship in Romania.
