Callum Wilson has been told to join Everton as his Newcastle United future remains in limbo.
Former England defender Joleon Lescott has urged Callum Wilson to ditch Newcastle United for Everton.
The 33-year-old’s contract has left than a fortnight to run as he considers a fresh, incentivised deal. Injuries have plagued Wilson’s time at St James' Park but he is viewed as one of Eddie Howe’s most trusted lieutenants.
However, for the first time, doubts about the striker’s ability emerged last season. Wilson failed to score a Premier League goal in any of his cameo substitute appearances.
Callum Wilson future in doubt
Away to Liverpool in February - a game the No.9 started - he blew a golden opportunity as Newcastle went on to lose 2-0. The Magpies are understood to be chasing a forward this summer, with Brighton talisman Joao Pedro heavily linked.
Will Osula is also emerging as a possible backup to undisputed first-choice Alexander Isak. That raised further questions over Wilson’s future five years after he signed from Bournemouth for £20million.
Everton told to sign Callum Wilson
Ex-Premier League defender Lescott believes Everton, his former club, should consider a move for Wilson. The Toffees are preparing for life at a new stadium after enjoying a bounce under David Moyes.
“I’ll tell you who wouldn’t be a bad one, Callum Wilson,” Lescott said when asked who Everton should sign. “He wouldn’t be a bad signing because he focuses on goals, has a high work rate and that is what Everton fans love.
“As much as you’re scoring goals, what are you giving? He plays with his heart on his sleeve. Knowing him as a person, the temperament of the club and the expectation, he’s coming from Newcastle where the expectation is very high, so he wouldn’t be fazed by the expectation of Everton either.”

Callum Wilson calm about Newcastle United future
Wilson hinted at a possible exit last month while insisting he remains “hungry” to carry on playing. He told the High Performance podcast: “I’m comfortable now. Financially, thankfully, I’m stable so that’s not an issue. I know I’m still able to provide for my family and put food on the table for them.
“I know my worth and I know my value and I’m still so hungry inside that even though I know Alex is scoring goals, I’m still frustrated when the team sheet comes out and I’m not starting so I know I’m not ready to leave football yet.
“I’d love to leave football before football leaves me. I’d never let an injury stop me from playing - I think I’ve been fit now for four-and-a-half months but I’ve probably only played 250 or 300 minutes and that side of things are frustrating because you don’t want to last few years on your career to fizzle away from you, especially when you’ve worked so hard to get to that point.
“It’s all new for me at the moment but I’m just enjoying life, enjoying football and playing with a smile on my face. What’s meant to be will be.”
