Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Announce Country Star as This Year’s Surprise Judge, and We’re All “Thunderstruck”

Last year, country superstar Kacey Musgraves made waves on the internet when she channeled the iconic Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders while dancing to AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck.” Her moves caught the eye of Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader Director Kelli Finglass, who encouraged her to “work a little bit on those kicks.”

Apparently, Musgraves has shown remarkable improvement in that area. Now, the “Golden Hour” singer will serve as this year’s surprise judge.

Kacey Musgraves Will Appear in the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Documentary

Last summer, America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders debuted on Netflix. The docuseries followed the squad as it selected members for its 2023-24 team.

Ahead of season 2’s Wednesday (June 18) premiere, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders official Instagram account announced Kacey Musgraves will judge this year’s final audition.

In a clip posted to Instagram Saturday (June 14), Finglass announces the eight-time Grammy Award winner as “my musical therapist, my friend, a friend of the Dallas Cowboys.” The crowd goes crazy as Musgraves, 36, struts into the room, sporting a blue set adorned with the team’s signature white star logos.

An East Texas Connection

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Director Kelli Finglass hails from Lindale, Texas—just a stone’s throw from Kacey Musgraves’ hometown of Golden. And the cheerleaders are not strangers to sharing a stage with the country superstar. Last November, they joined Musgraves in Dallas for her Deeper Well hometown concert as backup dancers for her 2018 song “High Horse.”

“They said my high kicks need a little work but other than that I have a decent shot,” the “Follow Your Arrow” singer later wrote on Instagram. “Thank you… for making my hometown show so unforgettably Texan. YES MA’AM 4 LIFE!”

Speaking with MySA, Finglass called Musgraves “a longtime friend of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.”

“We’ve had so much fun performing with her over the years. She honestly feels like part of our DCC family,” the director said. “Her energy is infectious and her style is just so fun. We knew she’d be the perfect surprise judge for this year’s final audition.”

In the Instagram comments section, several members of the squad made their admiration clear. “so iconic, literally still fan girling,” wrote cheerleader Julissa Garcia.

Tori Skills added, “This was the coolest thing ever performing for you.”
