Liverpool ready to sign another £100m star after Florian Wirtz, Richard Hughes is ‘just getting started’

Liverpool are already leading the way in the Premier League when it comes to recruiting players this summer.

Jeremie Frimpong is already a Liverpool player and Florian Wirtz will undergo a medical with the club at the end of the week.

In addition, Liverpool are close to signing Milos Kerkez as well — sporting director Richard Hughes is executing a window that he and Arne Slot have long been waiting for.

Slot will undoubtedly be happy with the progress already being made at Anfield, however, Wirtz may not be the final piece of the jigsaw for Liverpool just yet.

As in addition to the German international, who’s able to operate in a number of attacking positions, Liverpool still want to sign a superstar striker too.

Liverpool willing to spend big on striker to play alongside Florian Wirtz

With that in mind, chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has now provided an exciting update on Liverpool’s plans.

Speaking to TBR Football, Bailey confessed that Wirtz may not be the last £100m player Liverpool sign this summer, an exciting statement indeed.

Asked about Liverpool’s search for a striker, Bailey explained: “Let’s see what happens with Alexander Isak’s contract talks, which have already begun.

“Isak is still that dream signing for Liverpool, there’s no doubt about that and the money is still to do a deal.

“Darwin Nunez is going to leave, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa probably will and although it’s not the plan right now, Luis Diaz still might go too.

“That’ll almost pay for their new striker in full. And as I said, do not rule out Victor Osimhen going to Liverpool.

“They’re aware of what’s out there and Liverpool know Osimhen is one of the best available, don’t be surprised if his name comes up more and more.

“Liverpool have done work on Hugo Ekitike as well like we’ve said, but I don’t think anyone is going to pay €100m for him, but let’s see where that one goes.

“But I fully expect another striker to come in after Wirtz — he’ll be the record deal but he might not be the last £100m player we see join Liverpool.

“They’re willing to do that, they’re willing to buy and they’re not finished yet. Hughes isn’t taking any summer holidays yet, they’re just getting started.”

Who is the right striker for Arne Slot at Liverpool?

As things stand, the names of three strikers do keep being mentioned in relation to Liverpool: Alexander Isak, Victor Osimhen and Hugo Ekitike.

All three are very different options, and whilst Ekitike is very similar to Isak in a lot of ways, perhaps Osimhen would still be the most effective alternative to the Newcastle United striker.

Games Goals Assists

Alexander Isak 42 27 6

Victor Osimhen 41 37 8

Hugo Ekitike 48 22 12

Isak, Osimhen and Ekitike compared across the 2024/25 season in all competitions.

As Bailey protests, Isak would still be the ‘dream’ striker for Liverpool, but Osimhen certainly wouldn’t be a bad alternative for the Reds based on his scoring last season.

And going beyond just goals, Osimhen has the ability to excel in transition, as well as being someone who can thrive in the box.

He’s something of a complete striker, just like Isak and Ekitike.

But the Napoli number nine is undoubtedly a lot further on his development in comparison to Ekitike, who might not befit such a huge fee this summer.
