Exclusive: How Don Goodman feels about Burnley keeping Josh Brownhill as Ipswich Town circle

Ipswich Town are understood to be keeping tabs on Josh Brownhill's situation at Burnley ahead of a potential summer swoop.

That's according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon, reporting via his Patreon account last weekend.

The Clarets skipper has been offered fresh terms to extend his stay at Turf Moor beyond this summer, but as of yet, the club are still waiting to hear of his decision.

As a result, Nixon claims that the Tractor Boys have been alerted to the possibility of snapping up the 29-year-old on a free transfer this summer, with Brownhill and his team understood to be looking for a significant payday on his next deal, wherever that may be.

"I would be absolutely shocked" - Don Goodman hands Burnley clear Josh Brownhill contract claim

Don Goodman

Speaking exclusively with Football League World, we asked Sky Sports pundit and former player, Don Goodman: 'Ipswich Town are reportedly keeping tabs on Josh Brownhill's Burnley contract situation. How surprised would you be to see him rock up at Portman Road next season?'

Goodman said: "What a season Josh Brownhill has just had last season.

"18 goals in 42 Championship games - his best goalscoring season before that was seven (in 2022/23 season).

"It's not just the goals with him; he's a leader, a motivator, and a top, top player at Burnley. So, I would be absolutely shocked if Burnley either can't or don't find a way of offering Josh Brownwhill a deal that would keep him there.

"If you're Ipswich Town, I completely understand why you would want to sign Josh Brownhill. But if Burnley don't keep him at the football club, that would not be a good look on them."

Losing Josh Brownhill under free agent circumstances would be sad end to superb Burnley career

Burnley's Josh Brownhill

A £9m signing from Bristol City in January 2020, Brownhill has proven to be one of the wisest investments made by Burnley in recent times.

The do-it-all central midfielder has evolved into an integral part of the Clarets' side over the last five-and-a-half years, and is entering this summer fresh off the back of winning his second promotion to the Premier League as a Burnley player.

A proven performer at both top flight, and especially at second tier level, the Burnley captain's 2024/25 season will surely go down as one of the most impressive individual campaigns from a Clarets player in recent memory.

42

As such, the former Bristol City star has emphatically proven that he's still very much in the prime of his career, and so to lose the captain and heartbeat of your team on a free transfer back to the division you've just been promoted from, would be a really sad and strange end to his Turf Moor tale.

Burnley fans would surely be left bewildered if this potential sequence of events plays out as such, and it may well take some of the shine off his Clarets legend for some supporters.
