Rico Lewis will miss Manchester City's Club World Cup tie with Al Ain after being sent off against Wydad AC.

The defender was given his marching orders in the closing stages of the 2-0 victory after he caught Samuel Obeng in the head with his follow through having slid in to make what was certainly initially a fair challenge. But referee Ramon Abatti brandished the red card and VAR did not overturn the decision.

Lewis will now miss the match against Al Ain, which takes place in the early hours of Monday morning (2am UK time). The 20-year-old was given the nod at right back for the Club World Cup opener ahead of Matheus Nunes, who was among the subs and came on for the final minutes of injury time.

A straight red at the tournament leads to a one-game ban - although it is possible for that to be increased depending on the severity of the incident.

Players will also be suspended for a match should they collect two yellow cards. City did not have anyone booked in their opener.

Cautions will be wiped after the quarter finals, meaning the only way a player can miss the final is if they are sent off in the last four.

Lewis was also sent off in the Premier League last December in the draw at Crystal Palace.

City take on Al Ain on Monday and then finish their group stage with a fixture against Juventus next week.

The Blues got off to a winning start in Philadelphia and victory over Al Ain will likely ensure a knockout spot.
