Man Utd's 2025/26 Premier League clash vs Arsenal is biggest test of Ruben Amorim's quiet'promise'to fans last season– opinion

Ruben Amorim’s admission during the 2024-25 season will be put to the test for Manchester United’s opening Premier League match against Arsenal in August.

Manchester United’s Premier League fixtures dropped on Wednesday and the Red Devils face a tough test against Mikel Arteta’s men at Old Trafford next season.

Arsenal will arrive at Old Trafford for the opening weekend of the 2025-26 Premier League season, with kick-off slated for 4:30pm UK time on 17th August.

United ended their lacklustre 2024-25 Premier League campaign in May before Ruben Amorim’s men took part in a two-match post-season tour in Asia.

Amorim is now being afforded the opportunity for the overhaul of his United first-team squad ahead of the 2025-26 season at Old Trafford under his reign.

United will return to action in July and August for their pre-season campaign before they face Arsenal in their Premier League opener at home next season.

Ruben Amorim made an eye-opening error during his early Man Utd managerial reign in the 2024-25 Premier League season

Manchester United managed to only finish 15th in the Premier League table last season, despite Ruben Amorim’s arrival from Sporting CP in 2024.

Erik ten Hag was sacked as United manager last October after a poor start to the 2024-25 campaign and the Red Devils struggled to bounce back in the league.

Ruben Amorim succeeded Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout and the United manager was ruthless with some of his cut-throat remarks about the Red Devils.

The 40-year-old Portuguese coach pulled no punches towards his players after United’s 3-1 Premier League defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford back in January.

Amorim insisted that the current Red Devils first-team squad might be the “worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United,” only a few months into his reign.

“I know you [media] want headlines, but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that,” he added at the time, as per BBC Sport.

“Here you go: your headlines.”

What was Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd promise to fans and why is it so important for the Arsenal match?

Amorim later walked back on his “worst team” remarks and the former Sporting CP manager admitted that he needs to be better at not losing his cool after matches.

“I need to calm down […] it’s hard for me to hide this frustration,” he told TNT Sports in January.

No matter how much it is spun, Amorim’s reign as United manager will be under the spotlight from the minute that he takes his seat in the dugout against Arsenal.

The United manager was afforded by some critics a ‘free pass’ over what happened last season, considering the sorry state of the Red Devils under Ten Hag.

However, Amorim is expected to be backed a fair bit in the summer transfer window and the excuses will be very few for the Portuguese coach to make next season.

Win or lose against Arsenal in the opening Premier League match of the new season, Amorim must control his frustrations and show he has started to “calm down.”
