Villarreal’s 2-1 victory over Real Betis happened on the 13th of April. It was a decisive moment in the race for the Champions League. Marcelino’s side got the better of a Betis team that had enjoyed a strong second half of the season. Goals from Thierno Barry and Ayoze Pérez secured three vital points in what felt like a Champions League play-off.

The Submarine secured Champions League qualification in style by defeating LaLiga champions Barcelona (2-3) at their own ground. Ayoze Perez opened the scoring, before Lamine Yamal and Fermín López struck for Barça. However, second-half goals from Santi Comesaña and Tajon Buchanan sealed the victory.

The final matchday of the season was a true celebration for Villarreal. The Yellows hosted Sevilla to mark their qualification for the Champions League and say goodbye to club legend Raúl Albiol. There was music, speeches and plenty of emotion before La morocha and the Champions League anthem echoed around the stadium. The night ended with fireworks—capping off a season to remember.

Villareal do have a great standing in Spain and Europe. To get to know them even better, you should check out Wikipedia and Transfermarkt. For a good beginning here are a few facts.

Because of their yellow shirts, Villareal are known as the ‘Yellow Submarine’ (El Submarino Amarillo). Until a club song was specially written in 2001, the side’s anthem was the Beatles number.

The mascot, named Groguet, is a figure with a submarine head. The town, a small suburb of Castellon de la Plana near Valencia, is known for its ceramics industry.

The club was founded in 1923. Their first stadium was rented for 60 pesetas a month – that’s 25 pence! First president was chemist José Calduch Almela. Villarreal CF has come a long way since its humble beginnings, but we will never forget where we came from.

Bruno Soriano. A favourite with the fans and one player to remember. Bruno bossed the heart of the Yellows midfield. He always left his heart and soul out on the pitch at the Estadio de la Cerámica. He was a great leader and top quality centre midfielder with unbelievable vision. He played 14 years for this club, 2006-2020, adding up 324 league games, scoring 25 goals.

Villarreal’s best finish in the Champions League competition is making it to the 2005/06 Champions League Semi-final against Arsenal FC. One step away from the biggest match in Europe. After two really tight legs against the English giants, Villarreal were knocked out of the competition.

The club won the Europa League in 2020–21. They have also two other winning trophies from the Europa Intertoto Cup, 2003 and 2004. Villarreal gained their best-ever league position in 2008. They finished second to Real Madrid by eight points.

We would also like to mention another legendary player. Manu Trigueros. He left Villareal in 2024, moving to Grenada. He had played 366 league games and scored 25 goals. He played for the clubs first team from 2012. He played in the 2021 Europa League final winning team. Never capped but a steady midfielder understanding the game brilliantly, as he pushed his club to the highest level.
