Foden scored the competition’s fastest ever goal after just one minute and 54 seconds of play at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, before setting up Jeremy Doku for our second shortly before the interval.

We came close to a third through Doku and substitute Erling Haaland, whilst Rico Lewis was shown a straight red card shortly before full-time for a high boot.

FODEN ELATED AFTER STARRING ROLE IN VICTORY OVER WYDAD

Foden was named Player of the Match after an influential display and the Englishman stressed the importance of starting the tournament with three points.

“Yeah, really important to start off with a win,” he said in his interview with City TV after the game.

“The pitch was quite dry at times, it was very hot. These things that we’re not used to, so we had to keep the ball a little bit longer sometimes and try to attack at the right time.

“So yeah, I’m happy with the result. Obviously there’s still a lot of things that we can improve. They had a few chances that we gave the ball away sloppily.

“But, it’s a great start. I’m just looking forward to the next game now.”

Foden also spoke about his own performance, touched on how our new signings Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders have settled into the team, and looked ahead to our second group fixture against Al Ain FC next week.
