The chance that Giannis Antetokounmpo gets traded to San Antonio has decreased dramatically from the small percentage it was at when the speculation began. That, however, hasn't stopped ESPN from opining on the possibility that the Bucks change course and move the Greek Freak instead of opting to retool for another run at a title.
A team of NBA insiders reported that Milwaukee's front office is in the process of scouring the free agent market and searching for trade opportunities, looking for ways to upgrade the roster around Giannis. That's clearly the number one priority.
Interestingly enough, the trade scenarios are speculated in the same article that revealed what the Bucks have been up to, so I'm going to make an educated guess here. Antetokounmpo hasn't announced anything because he's waiting to see what they can put around him, and if they can't make it happen, a trade is still on the table. It's the exact same situation De'Aaron Fox was in with the Kings.
If that's the case, anything can happen. How much time it takes to get there could be a problem, though. The Spurs may be out of it just because they've already committed to Kevin Durant or some other player who came available. But let's play make-believe and discuss Kevin Pelton's proposal if everything fell San Antonio's way.
Spurs would not be punting on their future for the now
In the proposed trade, the Spurs would have to give up Harrison Barnes, Keldon Johnson, and Jeremy Sochan, along with four first-round picks and a first-round pick swap. The number two overall pick would be gone in this deal, so we'd have to say goodbye to the prospect of drafting Dylan Harper, but the Silver and Black would hold onto the 14th pick.
They'd also keep control of Atlanta's 2027 first-rounder and their own 2029 first-rounder. If I'm Brian Wright, I'm agreeing to that deal faster than you can say "Race for Seis."
SA gets to keep Devin Vassell and Stephon Castle in this deal, so they get to roll out a lineup of De'Aaron Fox, Castle, Vassell, Giannis, and Victor Wembanyama. The second unit would need to be filled out, but Julian Champagnie and Blake Wesley are still there. The 14th pick can be used to draft another talented young player who should be able to contribute immediately.
Another option would see the Spurs flip the 14th pick for more assets they could use to add players either by trading down or just trading it away for an established player. Whatever they decide, they'd have a mix of veterans to help them challenge for a title now, but they'd still have the young guns to take them into the future. I'd miss Sochan, but this deal would be a no-brainer.
