Now that the San Antonio Spurs have landed the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, it places them in an extremely advantageous position. No, they won’t be able to secure Cooper Flagg, the draft lottery’s top prize, but getting the next best prospect gives the Spurs a very valuable trade chip.
Of course, the Spurs may prefer to simply hold onto the No. 2 pick and hope their new prospect develops into the type of talent who blossoms into an All-Star next to Victor Wembanyama.
According to [ESPN’s NBA Draft experts Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45515479/2025-nba-mock-draft-59-picks-trade-talks-heat-30-teams), the Spurs have no plans to trade the No. 2 overall pick and will likely instead stick and pick guard Dylan Harper.
> “Rival teams attempting to engage in trade talks with the Spurs have come away with the impression it’s unlikely they move down or off the pick at No. 2; it seems San Antonio is excited about the possibility of adding a talent of Harper’s caliber and is willing to be patient, figuring out roster construction concerns later.”

As much as the Spurs likely want to accelerate their competitive timeline to help Wembanyama win right away, he’s still just 21 years old. The reality is that the Spurs have a lot of time to figure things out around their young superstar.
Drafting a prospect and seeing him develop into a superstar is the Spurs’ best path to building a championship contender, and Harper could be the athlete who helps them accomplish their goals.
