With the arrival of Dan Quinn's coaching staff last season, the Washington Commanders saw improvement in several key roster spots.
One of the most staggering changes over the last year has been at the linebacker position.
Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu were brought in as veterans who understood what Quinn wanted to build on the defensive side of the ball. Despite their age (Wagner is 34), both players had major impacts on Washington's season last year.
It's why they were ranked as one of the best linebackers groups by Pro Football Focus rankings entering the 2025 NFL season.
"Wagner is entering his age-35 season but has shown no signs of slowing down. While his PFF coverage grade has dipped over the past two seasons, Wagner remains an elite run defender (91.2 PFF grade), tackler (86.3), and blitzer (90.9)," said PFF. "He led all qualifying linebackers in PFF run-defense and pass-rush grades in 2024, and his 91.2 figure against the run marked his third straight season surpassing the 91.0 threshold."
Luvu was just as crucial to the defense as Wagner. The former Carolina Panther recorded a career-high eight sacks to accompany an All-Pro season.
While there is concern that Wagner's age may catch up to him in this essential year as DC bids for a title, the duo has become an important part of Washington's defense. If they can continue to play consistently well, the rest of the unit should be up to their usual selves.
No doubt about it: The linebackers are a big part of Washington's success.
