The Buss family, the longtime owners of the Los Angeles Lakers, has agreed to sell a majority ownership stake in the basketball franchise to Los Angeles Dodgers owner and Guggenheim Partners LLC chief executive officer Mark Walter, according to a person familiar with the discussions.

Walter is worth $12.5 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Walter owns the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, the newly formed Cadillac Formula One team, and the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

The Buss family originally purchased the Lakers for $67.5 million in 1979. ESPN first reported on the sale.
