Los Angeles Rams: Undrafted Free Agent Named Breakout Candidate by Pfn

The Los Angeles Rams wrapped up their final day of mandatory minicamp on Wednesday and will have a month-long break. Once the break ends, the team will start training camp on July 22 at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. One position to monitor during the summer is linebacker, as a former undrafted free agent is poised for a full-time role in Year 2.

Omar Speights began his rookie season as the backup linebacker but took over as the starter following the injury to Troy Reeder. He excelled against the run and was an okay pass rusher, but struggled in coverage. Speights recorded 67 tackles and two TFLs while posting 23 stops, four pressures, and allowing a 96.6 passer rating in 17 regular-season games and ten starts.

In a PFN article, Jacob Infante goes through each NFL team’s breakout candidate to watch throughout mandatory minicamp. Infante named Omar Speights for the Los Angeles Rams. He points to Speights’ making the 53-man roster as an undrafted free agent, being expected to take over as the full-time starter, and his excellence against the run.

“Not only did Omar Speights crack the Los Angeles Rams’ 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie in 2024, but he also started in 10 games. That’s impressive, immediate contributions from a UDFA signing,” Infante said.

“Speights was impressed with run support as a rookie. There’s little reason to think that it shouldn’t continue in 2025. Working behind a talented Rams defensive line, he’ll have many chances to boost his tackling numbers in Year 2.”
