Video: Al-Hilal Hold Real Madrid to a Stalemate

Al Hilal held European giants Real Madrid to a 1–1 draw in the opening match of Group H at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in Miami.

Al-Hilal started the match on the front foot, taking control of the match early in the first half, however, it was Real Madrid who struck first. Against the run of play, Gonzalo Garcia opened the scoring in the 34th minute, finishing coolly after a Rodrygo assist on the counter.

But the lead didn’t last long. Just seven minutes later, Al-Hilal won a penalty after Marco Asensio fouled Marcos Leonardo inside the box. Rúben Neves stepped up and slotted home the equalizer in the 41st minute.

The second half was marked by late drama for Los Blancos. In stoppage time (90+2’), Madrid were awarded a penalty after Mohamed Al-Qahtani fouled Fran García. But Yassine Bono, gave everyone a flashback of his 2022 World Cup heroics with Morocco and guessed correctly, upsetting Federico Valverde’s spot-kick and securing a historic draw.

Al-Hilal’s performance marked the first time any Asian team avoided defeat against Real Madrid in Club World Cup history. They will look to build on that momentum in their upcoming Group H matches against Pachuca and Red Bull Salzburg.
