Fabrizio Romano names new Manchester United transfer 'priority' with key sale planned

Man Utd need to raise money in the summer transfer window and want to secure permanent exits where possible.

Manchester United have prioritised a permanent exit for Jadon Sancho in the summer transfer window after he spent last season on loan with Chelsea following a fallout with former manager Erik ten Hag.

United allowed the 25-year-old to join the London club on a season-long loan last summer, which included an obligation to make it permanent for at least £20 million. However, Chelsea also included a £5 million penalty fee that they paid after they failed to agree on personal terms with the forward.

Sancho netted five goals and notched 10 assists as Enzo Maresca's side secured a top-four finish in the Premier League and scored in their Conference League final victory over Real Betis. United hoped Chelsea would exercise their option to buy the former Borussia Dortmund star permanently, but they are now back at square one, with Sancho deemed surplus to requirements by current head coach Ruben Amorim.

Jadon Sancho sale the priority

Manchester United are well aware they must sell players this summer if they can fund all of the summer investment they would like. Matheus Cunha joined in a £62.5 million deal from Wolves last week and talks are ongoing to bring Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo to the club.

Ruben Amorim also wants to sign a striker and a central midfielder, but those additions will hinge on their ability to bring in funds from sales. Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony are also on the market, though it seems unlikely they will all leave in permanent deals.

United deem the quartet surplus to requirements, but their hand will be weakened as the summer goes on if they are still at the club. It means they might eventually have to entertain loan exits, which include an obligation to buy or purchase option, though the immediate priority is to secure as many full sales as possible.

Taking to social media on Wednesday, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano issued an update on the future of Sancho. "Manchester United will give priority to selling Jadon Sancho on a permanent deal before opening doors to loans," he stated. "Napoli are among clubs keen but not intentioned to pay his current salary, early stages - and more clubs in the race."

Dortmund director addresses Sancho reunion

Jadon Sancho has already played for Borussia Dortmund twice in his senior career and the Manchester United forward has been linked with a sensational third move to the German club.

Sancho joined Dortmund from City in 2017 before he moved to United for £73 million four years ago. He returned to the Bundesliga side on loan in the second-half of the 2023/24 season and helped them reach the Champions League final, which they lost to Real Madrid.

However, speaking last week, Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl cast doubt on a summer move. “Of course, contact with Jadon is always there, in some way, because we have a very long history,” he said. “But it’s not an issue for us right now. We have other priorities at the moment and that’s why the Sancho issue was probably played up more in the media than discussed internally.”
