Newcastle United are set to travel to Manchester United on December 27.
The Premier League have confirmed Newcastle United could still travel to Manchester United on Boxing Day.
Fans across the country were puzzled when the fixtures were released yesterday only to discover no games on December 26. Boxing Day football has been a long-standing tradition in England - with matches even being played on Christmas Day as recent as 1965.
Efforts in recent years have been made to ease the fixture pile-up on Premier League players. Since 2022-23, top-flight clubs have scrapped the game that used to take place between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Premier League statement
There was concern when the fixtures for the upcoming campaign dropped and every game on matchweek 18 was billed for December 27. However, the Premier League has clarified that this is subject to change once TV broadcasters choose their selections for Boxing Day.
“In keeping with our commitment to providing a greater rest period over the Christmas and New Year period, no club will be requested to play less than 48 hours between Match Rounds 18 and 19 (December 27 and December 30),” a top-flight statement read. “Matches in Round 18 (December 27) are available for movement to Boxing Day for live broadcast selection.
“Each club has a home match on either 27 December or 3 January, with travel reduced on 27 December and 30 December.”
Manchester United vs Newcastle United
Newcastle are scheduled to face Man United on December 27 but, as mentioned, the game could be pushed forward 24 hours. The Magpies recorded a festive win over Ruben Amorim’s men last year with a 2-0 win at Old Trafford.
Three Boxing Day trips to the Theatre of Dreams in seven years between 2012 and 2019 all ended in Toon defeat and Newcastle - a club on the up - will be looking to exact revenge. A delve into the history books shows the Magpies emerging victorious over Man United on Boxing Day with a 1-0 away win in 1908.
