Phil Foden has now done something no other English player has ever done before

Man City got their FIFA Club World Cup campaign off to a great start on Wednesday in Philadelphia.

Pep Guardiola’s men were 2-0 winners over the Moroccan outfit Wydad AC, courtesy of a goal from Phil Foden, which was followed up by Jeremy Doku striking just before the halftime break.

The performance was not the best from the Manchester club, which is to be expected given the contest was their first of the season, but the work of James French at Man City stood out, as the Premier League side looked much better at set pieces.

City fans would have been pleased to see this, but also to see Foden get back on the scoresheet, with the Englishman’s goal helping him create a bit of history.

Phil Foden creates FIFA Club World Cup history

Heading into the tournament, Foden made it clear that he wants to win the FIFA Club World Cup, and so does the Man City dressing room, as they want to be the first team to be crowned the winners of the revamped competition.

The 25-year-old showed his intent on Wednesday as the midfielder impressed against Wydad, which saw him crowned Man of the Match at the end of the contest.

Foden also created a little bit of history in Philadelphia, as the Man City star became the first English player to score in multiple editions of the Club World Cup, which includes all formats, having also scored against Fluminense in the 2023 final.

This summer is big for the 25-year-old, as Foden is one Man City star who needs to impress Guardiola after the tough 2024/25 campaign the midfielder experienced.

Man City fans would have liked what they saw from the England international on Wednesday, and if he can get back to his best ahead of the new Premier League season, that would be a massive boost for the Manchester club.
