Edwin van der Sar tells Ruben Amorim 'top class' Man Utd player is going to be 'great' next season

Manchester United’s summer transfer window is expected to get very busy at some point, with numerous other positions desired on top of the Matheus Cunha addition.

Ineos‘ recruitment in the opening 12 months of their spell at the helm of the club has been strong for the majority of business.

No Manchester United signing has been considered as a flop, with Ineos signing talented young players along with hungry mid-20s stars who in theory are coming into their prime.

The 2025-26 season will be deciding for most of the squad, with 2024-25 considered a write off.

Ruben Amorim faces a difficult first five games in the Premier League, but will hope to have significant reinforcements to ensure that things are better than last season.

With Matheus Cunha through the door already, Jason Wilcox is preparing to add several more names in necessary positions. This includes one position that Edwin van der Sar is convinced United are already strong in.

Edwin van der Sar urges Ruben Amorim to trust Andre Onana

United have been linked with several new goalkeepers this summer already after the disastrous campaign that Andre Onana had in goal.

Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez has been linked with United, while numerous others such as Zion Suzuki, Senne Lammens and James Trafford has been linked.

However, now Onana seems set to remain at United this summer as he appears to have no suitors, while Altay Bayindir is still expected to be sold with a new challenger arriving.

This news will delight Van der Sar who is a massive supporter of Onana, knowing him from Ajax, and has now discussed the Cameroon international with ESPN.

Van der Sar was asked to choose whether he would start in goal ahead of current goalkeepers, and when it got to Onana he said: “I wouldn’t do that to my good friend Andre Onana, come on.

“He’s top class, needs to be given more faith, and next season he’s going to be a great goalkeeper for the club.”

Onana had a terrible campaign under Amorim, however, Van der Sar is correct in pointing out that he is a good goalkeeper and has shown it in spells for United.

Onana set for Manchester United redemption

It has been decided that Onana will remain at United this summer, with goalkeeper ultimately not high enough on the priority list for United to see major funds dedicated to finding an upgrade.

This will see Onana in the United line-up vs Arsenal on the 17th of August when the 2025-26 Premier League and he will have a big point to prove.

Onana will know he is capable of better than last season showed and with a strong season for Amorim, he could become a favourite at United, going zero to hero just like Harry Maguire has shown possible.

Despite all his struggles, Onana racked up nine clean sheets in the league last season and boasted a better save percentage than the likes of Martinez. If he finds the from of 2023-24, United’s goalkeeping woes will be solved.
