'As did his father': Leverkusen director shares what Florian Wirtz said to him about Liverpool 'months ago'

It is set to be a big few days at Liverpool as they aim to tie up a couple of important moves in the transfer market.

The Reds have had a busy start to the window, with negotiations taking place to add more firepower to Arne Slot’s squad.

Without question, the highlight of Liverpool‘s business is set to be the signing of Florian Wirtz, who is on the verge of joining from Bayer Leverkusen.

After Liverpool agreed a record fee for Wirtz last week, the German will fly in for a medical over the coming days.

Wirtz’s decision to reject interest from Bayern Munich and join the Reds has caused shock in Germany, with the Bundesliga champions not used to losing out on top players from their own division.

Nevertheless, Wirtz shirking interest from his homeland in order to move to England was seemingly not a surprise for Leverkusen director Rudi Voller, who has revealed he has long since known about the player’s preference.

Florian Wirtz decided on Liverpool move ‘months ago’

When Wirtz’s addition is sealed in the coming days it will send out an enormous message to the rest of the footballing world.

Liverpool do not often go into the market to spend such huge fees and that they have turned the head of one of Germany’s very best talents will not go unnoticed.

But although there may be surprise in some quarters, Voller has told former Real Madrid superstar Toni Kroos that he was not one of those caught off guard by Wirtz’s decision.

“A few months ago, he hinted to me, as did his father, that he had a tendency to go to Liverpool,” Voller said on Kroos’ Einfach mal Luppen podcast.

“Everyone was kind of hoping that he would stay here in Leverkusen for another year and not leave until after the World Cup.

“That would have been my preferred solution. But this is absolutely fine. The boy is ready for the Premier League.”

It has felt like a long month for Liverpool supporters as negotiations with Leverkusen and Voller for Wirtz have dragged on.
