Emi Martinez preference claim as Man United 'make contact' over Aston Villa transfer

Manchester United have reportedly made 'formal contact' with Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez's representatives over a potential move for the Argentine this summer. Reports in Martinez's native country claim that United have been in touch with Martinez's agent about completing a switch.

It's pointed out that Martinez, who has been at Villa since 2020 when he moved from Arsenal, wishes to remain in England and the Premier League, despite the fact that he has suitors in Spain and Saudi Arabia; Martinez has lived in England for most of his career having moved in 2010 from Independiente.

The 32-year-old, who signed a new contract just under a year ago which runs until 2029, won't come cheap for any interested party; indeed in the event he were to leave Villa this summer, they would be sure to make a substantial profit on the £20m fee they paid Arsenal to take him five years ago. Since, Martinez has established himself as among the best in the world.

United, undergoing an overhaul of their squad under Ruben Amorim, have signed Matheus Cunha but are eager to move on a number of other players including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and goalkeeper Andre Onana, who was asked recently if he'd be leaving Old Trafford. He replied: “Will I leave? I don’t know, we’ll see!”

Villa, who will need to be mindful of the P&S rules for which they'll be required to adhere to before the June 30, are in the market for another keeper at any rate after the departure of Robin Olsen at the end of his contract.

They've been linked with French international Lucas Chevalier of Lille, but Joan Garcia is on his way to Barcelona and Caoimhin Kelleher has already completed a move to Premier League rivals Brentford.
