Everton are reportedly one of a number of clubs interested in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

The fixtures are out and all of a sudden, everything feels very real. We have a schedule to build the next 12 months around, key dates circled on the calendar and the first games at the stunning new Hill Dickinson Stadium to look forward to.

Behind the scenes, Everton are also piecing together the leadership team that will build for the club’s future, with the news emerging that Manchester United academy chief Nick Cox is in talks to join the project.

Just one thing is missing… a squad. Ten senior players will officially have parted ways with the Blues come the end of the month, a number that could well grow depending on the outcomes of the outstanding contract talks - with Seamus Coleman, Idrissa Gueye, Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all unclear, officially at least.

Even in the unlikely event that all four were to stay, David Moyes needs new recruits - lots of them. He has no proven options on the right of his midfield, question marks over the strength of his forward line and serious issues to address at central midfield and right-back. He needs, at the very least, cover at left-back and goalkeeper too.

With that in mind, Everton are an easy club for the rumour mill to whir around this summer and we have already seen a lot of names floated as potential signings. From Kyle Walker and Jack Grealish to the likes of Vladimir Coufal, Evan Ferguson and now, according to the Guardian, Joe Gomez.

There is genuine interest in plenty of players, including Ben Doak, Thierno Barry and Nick Woltemade, but right now the priority appears to be finding clarity on the remaining out of contract players - and holding off interest in Jarrad Branthwaite.
