Report: Hammer blow for Leeds United as Juventus join race to sign Farke target represented by Jorge Mendes

Leeds United and Juventus have been in some headlines of late, amid rumours that Daniel Farke wants to sign Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz.

It’s not often that Leeds United and Juventus cross paths. But reports in the last week have had the two footballing giants in the same headlines.

It’s been reported that Leeds United are set to be offered Douglas Luiz at Juve, following his miserable maiden season in Italy after signing from Aston Villa in a £42million deal last summer.

Since, Leeds United fans have given their verdict on Luiz and they’re getting excited by the possibility that Luiz could be playing his football at Elland Road next season.

A deal still seems like it has a way to go, and there are undoubtedly plenty of other teams looking to sign the former Man City player as well. But it’s an exciting link nonetheless.

And Leeds and Juventus are now involved in a separate headline with the two teams now looking to raid Southampton for a new midfield addition this summer.

Juventus join transfer battle for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes

Mateus Fernandes shone for Southampton in the Premier League last season after the 20-year-old’s move from Sporting CP last summer. Following the Saints’ relegation, it’s been revealed that Leeds United are interested in signing Fernandes this summer, along with Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.

Now though, an emerging report from Italian outlet Gazzetta has revealed how Juventus have added Portugal U21 star Fernandes to their own summer shortlist. Juventus are desperate to sign a new midfielder, perhaps to replace Luiz, and Gazzetta report that Fernandes could even arrive at Juve on loan this summer.

Interestingly, Fernandes is represented by Jorge Mendes. The Portuguese super-agent oversaw Francisco Conceicao’s loan move from Porto to Juventus last summer and could do a similar deal with Fernandes this time round.

Mateus Fernandes’ interesting response to Leeds United transfer rumours

The Luiz link here certainly makes things interesting. Leeds United are linked with several midfielders right now but Luiz would certainly be a marquee signing, if Daniel Farke can get it done of course.

And Juve turning their attentions to Fernandes could yet work out best for them and Leeds, if the two teams can agree that Juve can have Fernandes and Leeds can have Luiz.

Of course, it’s never that straight-forward with other teams always in the running. But Fernandes could yet stay at Southampton for next season, having suggested that he’s gearing up for the next season at St Mary’s.

In a recent interview, Fernandes said when asked if he’ll be staying at the club: “I have a contract with Southampton, so I think so. The next season will be different, I hope. Maybe we can play much better and win many, many games. We will work for that, train for that, and I think we can do much better than this year.”

So far this summer, Leeds United have signed Lukas Nmecha and agreed a deal to sign Jaka Bijol from Udinese.
