‘I need playing time’ - Will Osula sends firm message to Eddie Howe at Newcastle United

Will Osula is shining for Denmark at the under-21 Euros but saw little game time for Newcastle United last season.

Will Osula believes he can shine for Newcastle United if given the chance to showcase his talents.

The 21-year-old arrived last summer from Sheffield United for £15million but endured a frustrating debut campaign. Just 124 minutes in the Premier League reflected a season of development, with Eddie Howe keen to get Osula adjusted to his rigours training methods.

The Toon boss has done this with several stars following their arrival - most notably Lewis Hall before his drastic transformation. Osula did, however, impress when given the opportunity to shine.

The forward performed well in FA Cup wins over Bromley and Birmingham City earlier this year. He also bagged his first Premier League goal from the bench in the 3-0 win against Ipswich Town.

Will Osula sends Newcastle United message

Newcastle are now watching Osula shine at the under-21s Euros, where he is the joint-top scorer after the group stage. Speaking at the tournament, the Toon prodigy opened up about a need for more minutes.

“I just need playing time to show what I can do,” Osula told Bold. “It means something to me. I already know…Only myself and my father know what I can do. When playing time comes, everyone will see what I can do on the pitch.”

Denmark under-21s boss agrees

Steffen Hojer - who dropped Osula from the under-21s drop last season due to a lack of game time - shares his sentiment. He said: “I think I’ve mentioned the potential many times and it’s because he plays too little for people to discover him.

“But against Holland, you got a little bit of it. On this team, he’s been good, and he’s scored a lot of goals. He has the speed he has, and he’s not easy for the others to handle. It’s quite impressive what he goes in and does when you think about what he came with.”

Eddie Howe on Will Osula

Howe explained why he has taken a careful approach with Osula when grilled by the media. He said: "I always encourage the players to be themselves and Will is very much himself. Hopefully, the supporters take to that personality and I think they have, and it's great to see. The love and affection between player and supporter is so important. He will feel that love and that will help his game.

“He's bright, he's bubbly, he's enthusiastic, he's passionate and they're positive things and will help his career. For us, it's about being consistent with our development of him. Not everybody has his ability and his attributes so it's about honing those skills and making sure we continue to get him ready for the rigours of the Premier League."
