Leeds United set to be handed huge financial boost this summer – figure said to be in millions

This summer seems to be a crucial one for Leeds United players. Especially some of the youngsters on the club’s books.

When the transfer window opened, reports stated that Leeds had put up Joe Gelhardt, Darko Gyabi and Sam Greenwood for sale. The trio had played with the club’s U21 side, and featured in some games with the first team. Ultimately, they failed to become first choice, and are now likely to leave the club this summer.

Wrexham are one of the clubs keen to make a move for Joe Gelhardt.

Mateo Joseph could also be a potential exit this summer. The 21-year old impressed last season, but his lack of minutes could see him leave in the summer. European clubs like Strasbourg and Real Betis are keen on signing him. Both clubs plan to make him a part of their first team.

Playing time was also one of the big reasons why Charlie Cresswell left Elland Road last year. The defender was well positioned to become a staple of the first team, but found opportunities to play hard to come by. Eventually, he sealed a move to Toulouse.

Since then, he has raised his stock, impressing in France. This summer, he is now a hot commodity as some clubs are keen on signing him. Di Marzio reports that Serie A side Como are pushing to sign the England U21 international. A £14.5million is said to be enough to get a deal done. Cresswell joined the French side for £3.8million last summer.

Leeds will end up being the beneficiary. The Athletic revealed that the Whites have a 15% sell-on clause for the defender. Which means they earn a percentage of the profit. If a deal goes through for Toulouse, Leeds would earn 15% of the £10.7million profit, which is an estimated £1.6million.

Should Leeds have sold Charlie Cresswell?

The situation last season made the decision very difficult. Leeds had an established center back pairing, which meant Cresswell would not get a lot of minutes. The player was ready to leave, and Toulouse offered a way out. There are not many instances where Cresswell remains at Leeds United considering last summer’s situation. At least the club will make some decent money off him.
