Report: Man Utd to make contact to sign Premier League goalkeeper who has even worse season than Andre Onana

Manchester United’s hunt for a new goalkeeper has seen almost all corners of the globe.

After Andre Onana left Ruben Amorim with little reason to trust him; through his performances, a new goalkeeper was always going to be a likely summer target.

This has resulted in Manchester United scouring the world for a new shot stopper to upgrade on Onana.

From Brazil, United have been linked with John Victor, who won the Copa Libertadores with Botafogo.

Meanwhile, there have been lots of names rumoured from Europe, with United registering an interest in Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Emerging Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens has been consistently linked with United as a cheaper option to possibly battle Onana for the number one slot.

There have also been targets from within the Premier League.

Manchester United open talks for Emiliano Martinez

One shock goalkeeping link that doesn’t seem to go away is that United are interested in Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa.

The Argentine World Cup winner has outlined his desire to leave Villa Park, and United are among the clubs showing substantial interest in him.

Now, it comes according to journalist Ben Jacobs for GiveMeSport, that Martinez has made it clear he intends to join United this summer.

The 32-year-old has aged like a fine wine, but Villa are expected to demand £40m for his transfer this summer.

Despite the Argentine’s interest, United have not decided to sell Onana yet and would need to do so to even consider a move for Martinez.

In addition, the Argentine outlet Doble Amarilla has claimed that talks have actually already begun between United and Martinez’s representatives.

The report claims that if no problems arise in negotiation, it will likely be his new club.

Andre Onana vs Emiliano Martinez

There is a real clamour to replace Onana this summer, with his performances not deserving of the starting berth at United. However, Ineos must make sure whoever arrives is an upgrade.

During the 2024-25 season, United’s opponents were targeting Onana as the perceived weakness, and this was the case throughout the campaign.

However, Martinez actually kept fewer clean sheets than Onana over the duration of the 2024-25 season in the Premier League. Onana kept nine, and Martinez kept eight.

Strengthening the idea that this would not be an upgrade is Martinez had a save percentage of 69 per cent, which is just 0.1 per cent better than Onana’s – not even one save better.

Spending £40m on a 32-year-old who had a worse season than Onana, in his worst season, would be a ludicrous decision, one Ineos are too wise to make.
