Italy head coach drops major hint on Federico Chiesa’s Liverpool future

Italy head coach Gennaro Gattuso has spoken about Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa’s uncertain future at Anfield.

Federico Chiesa joined Liverpool in 2024, contributing to the team’s success in winning the Premier League trophy during his tenure. However, it’s worth noting that he participated in only six Premier League matches last season.

Slot might have struggled to find a suitable position for the Italian winger, especially with Egyptian star Mohamed Salah in top form, scoring 29 goals in the league.

Chiesa also reportedly isn’t part of Slot’s plans for the upcoming season, and Fabrizio Romano previously reported that the 27-year-old wants to leave the club and get more regular game time.

Several clubs have shown interest in Chiesa, and multiple reports suggest he is considering a return to Italy during this summer transfer window.

Liverpool may also be open to selling him, as there seems to be no space in the squad for him. Serie A champions Napoli are reportedly the frontrunners to sign him.

Italy head coach Gattuso speaks about Chiesa

Gennaro Gattuso told the media: “Chiesa must play more, it’s important.”

Chiesa featured for just 466 minutes in all competitions for the Reds last season. Despite limited time on the pitch, the Italian winger appears to remain part of the national team plans, as long as he secures more playing time.

Gattuso further added: “Our doors are always open, but we want Fede to play on a regular basis.”

It now seems almost certain that Chiesa will leave Anfield this summer. While Napoli are currently the favourite to sign him, no agreement has been reached between the clubs yet.

A return to Italy might be the ideal move for Chiesa, who previously played for both Fiorentina and Juventus and knows Serie A well.
