Real Madrid have announced Kylian Mbappe has been hospitalised with gastroenteritis while in the United States during the Club World Cup, with the France star set to undergo tests and treatment.

Mbappe missed Madrid's opening 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal after reports of a "viral outbreak" and now there will be huge doubts over whether he will be back in time for the next game against Pachuca on Sunday.

His manager Xabi Alonso confirmed he was suffering from an infection after the clash with the Saudi Pro League side and said he was not sure when he would return.

"We still don’t know if he’ll be ready for the next match," he said. "He’s been dealing with a serious viral infection. We’ll monitor his progress closely in the coming days." His comments came despite previously saying Mbappe was "feeling a little better, but not good enough" to feature.

And on Thursday afternoon, Madrid posted a brief update on Mbappe's condition on their website, writing: "Our player Kylian Mbappe has acute gastroenteritis and has been hospitalized for various tests and treatment."

Gastroenteritis typically eases in a few days, but can last a week or longer in more serious cases. It is usually caused by a bacterial infection or a stomach bug and can cause vomiting or diarrhoea.

Mbappe is Madrid's most high-profile player after arriving from PSG on a free transfer last summer. He managed 43 goals in 56 appearances in all competitions.

Last season he managed to stay mostly injury-free but did suffer with a hamstring and muscle injury that ruled him out for a couple of games.

Alonso replaced Mbappe with young striker Gonzalo Garcia - and the 21-year-old scored for Madrid in the first half before Ruben Neves' penalty secured a draw for Al-Hilal.
