Alexander Isak of Newcastle United
Alexander Isak of Newcastle United
name has been dominating the Liverpool transfer rumour mill over the last few weeks. Now, though, there could be another player whose name is on everyone's lips when it comes to the prospect of signing for the Reds.
Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak is continuing to be mentioned as a potential transfer target for Liverpool this summer. The Sweden international has previously been linked with Arsenal, although those rumours have quietened down somewhat over the last few months.
Isak scored 27 goals in all competitions for Newcastle last season and played a key role in helping the club qualify for the Champions League. Not to mention, he scored what proved to be the winning goal against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final in March.

Liverpool will know first-hand what Isak is capable of on his day, so it should be no surprise to see the striker be a player of interest to the Reds, if the recent rumours turn out to be true. However, how likely is it that Isak actually moves to Anfield?
For starters, let's pretend that the rumours are true and that Liverpool do have a genuine interest in signing Isak this summer.
As the ECHO reported earlier this week, Liverpool are big fans of Isak as they continue to monitor the striker market. Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike is also a player being tracked by the Reds as the summer transfer window rolls on.
Newcastle's qualification for the Champions League will almost certainly make a deal to sign Isak incredibly difficult to get off the ground. Before the Magpies secured European football at St James' Park, there were rumours of a potential asking price between £100million and £150million.
Various reports have claimed that Newcastle insist they will not sell Isak this summer. Should that be the case, Liverpool will find it even tougher to agree a deal to bring the striker to Anfield.
There's also the practicalities of what would be needed for Liverpool to spent £100million-plus on Isak. Given that the Reds are set to spend potentially up to £116million on Wirtz this summer, another fee in the same area would almost certainly need to be offset by some departures.
Some players to be linked with moves away from Anfield this summer include Darwin Nunez, Andy Robertson, Jarell Quansah, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa, Cody Gakpo and Kostas Tsimikas.
Liverpool would not want to let all of these players leave, but if money can be raised through some sales, that would go a long way towards raising the funds needed to bring Isak to the club.
All of this is guesswork at this point, of course. Only those within the Anfield hierarchy will have an idea of whether or not a move for Isak to Liverpool this summer is even remotely possible.
But if Liverpool do get any whisper that a move may be possible to bring Isak to Anfield, they would be wise to explore it, at the very least.
