'Talks continue' - Fabrizio Romano provides update with £34m Man Utd target in contract talks

Manchester United continue to be linked with goalkeepers and Gianluigi Donnarumma has emerged as a potential option.

The 2024/25 season was disappointing for both of Manchester United’s top goalkeeping options with Andre Onana dropped by Ruben Amorim following his mistakes in the Europa League.

Amorim defended Onana in public, but it was no surprise to see United linked with several goalkeeping targets this summer.

Altay Bayindir is expected to leave this summer after failing to step up in place of Onana when given the chance last season.

United have shown interest in Gianluigi Donnarumma as a goalkeeping option, and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now provided a key update.

Fabrizio Romano update on Gianluigi Donnarumma’s future

Reports have claimed that United have made an approach for Donnarumma having shared a long-term interest in the Italian shot-stopper.

Just weeks after winning the Champions League with PSG, the French outfit are having to consider selling the 26-year-old because his contract is coming to an end next year.

However, transfer expert Romano has issued an update claiming that Donnarumma is now in talks with PSG over a new deal.

While no agreement has been reached so far, Donnarumma entering talks suggests he is open to committing his long-term future to the French club.

Donnarumma is valued at £34m according to FootMercato, but it seems a deal could be snatched away from United if a new contract is agreed at PSG.

Andre Onana decision makes Gianluigi Donnarumma deal unlikely

If United did make a move for Donnarumma, it would be to make him the first-choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford.

However, for that to happen, United would need to offload Andre Onana and that now seems unlikely.

Onana is set to stay at United following a meeting between club chiefs and the player’s representatives.

Despite his underwhelming performances last season, it seems Amorim has enough faith in Onana to stay as the No.1 at Old Trafford in 2025/26.

Edwin van der Sar has backed Onana to shine at United and Ineos will hope the former United shot-stopper is right. Amorim cannot afford a poor start, and he cannot afford another season of goalkeeping errors.
