Man Utd considering move for £64m goalkeeper who is Ruben Amorim's dream Andre Onana replacement - Journalist

Manchester United’s goalkeeper pursuit this summer seems to be heating up with several top options considered.

There appears to be a growing belief that a new goalkeeper will arrive at Carrington this summer, with Andre Onana expected to be a casualty.

Despite Onana struggling throughout the 2024-25 season, Manchester United’s stance on the Cameroon international remains unclear over whether he will be sold or not.

It has been reported that United are leaning towards keeping Onana, a decision which would be controversial among the fanbase. But Edwin van der Sar has outlined his support for Onana, which is a big endorsement that could prove to be the right view.

While he is not guaranteed to stay or leave this summer, United have been linked with numerous goalkeepers, including Emiliano Martinez, who is a £40m Ineos target, who would be far from ideal.

But now United’s interest in the best possible goalkeeper addition has been outlined.

Manchester United considers Diogo Costa to replace Andre Onana

United first showed interest in Diogo Costa in 2023, prior to the club opting to target Onana instead. But now, Ineos can correct the wrong of the previous regime.

Now, Ben Jacobs has told The United Stand that the Porto number one remains an option discussed within Old Trafford.

“[Diogo Costa] is another name that Manchester United have discussed, and is appreciated within the club too. So he could be one to watch, but I’m not aware of any approach at this stage, but he is a name I have heard.”

In addition to Jacobs’ comments on Costa, Portuguese journalist Sebastiao Sousa-Pinto has reported interest from Old Trafford.

He claims that Costa remains on United’s list to take over from Onana as goalkeeper this summer.

It is explained that Costa has been Amorim’s favoured or dream option since January in the event that there is scope to bring in a new starting goalkeeper this summer.

A move for Costa would, however, be complicated, with a €75m release clause (£64m) being significantly above United’s current capabilities.

Manchester United also considering Djordje Petrovic

In the same interview, Jacobs explained that United may yet stick with Onana and outlined some options being considered for the number two goalkeeper role.

“We shouldn’t discount that a number two will come in and it will be a younger goalkeeper for the future, and they stick with Onana in the short term.

“United are searching the market for number ones and twos, while keeping the Onana situation open.

“They like the idea of Djordje Petrovic at Chelsea, who is available due to a gentleman’s pact for €30m, but that price is too high, and also Petrovic wants to be a number one. I don’t see United gambling on Petrovic despite his potential in the number one area; the interest was only for him to be a young number two. I’m not sure anything will happen.”

United wanted Petrovic back in 2023 before his move to Europe, and if he arrives, it would be a strong signing for the future. While there remain other potential additions.

“Lucas Chevalier is another one who is prepared to come in and be a number two with Newcastle United, another interested party if they can’t get James Trafford done.”
