The Jamie Gittens transfer saga has dragged on far longer than initially expected. Chelsea have reached a personal agreement with the player on a seven-year deal and have submitted as many as three offers to Borussia Dortmund with the highest one amounting to €55 million. However, all of them have been turned down as the German club remain firm on their transfer valuation of €65–70 million.
This deadlock has prompted Chelsea to explore alternate targets in case the Gittens deal falls through and it looks like they have identified another promising youngster as an alternative. It has ben suggested that the Blues have now shown interest in Lyon’s highly-rated Belgian youngster Malick Fofana.
As reported by Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea have enquired about Fofana. He is one of the names on their shortlist.
Plettenberg also stated that Gittens remains Chelsea’s top priority, with the verbal agreement between the club and the player still intact. That being said, no deal has been finalised with Borussia Dortmund as they still want €65 million, including bonuses.
Chelsea identify Fofana as transfer target following delay in Gittens deal
Gittens is believed to be eager to arrive at Stamford Bridge. However, Dortmund and Chelsea have yet to find any common ground, which puts a big question mark over the future of the deal.
Meanwhile, even if Chelsea manage to finally sign Gittens, the club could still pursue another quality winger like Fofana to further strengthen that position. Let's see how things play out over the coming weeks and months.
The Belgian international appeared in 41 matches for Lyon in the 24/25 season, contributing 11 goals and six assists. At just 20 years of age, these numbers speak for themselves regarding his quality and potential.
It will be interesting to see whether Chelsea bring in Gittens, Fofana, or both as much-needed additions on the left wing. Both youngsters are incredibly talented and can go on to become key players for the Blues.
