‘Active Negotiations Ongoing’ as ‘Controversial’ Liverpool Player Has ‘Opened Doors’ to Exit

Liverpool have had a very successful first season under Arne Slot, winning the Premier League title by an impressive ten-point margin. Many players shone, including the likes of Ryan Gravenberch who struggled under former boss Jurgen Klopp. However, one player, who made his breakthrough under the German manager, did not manage many minutes. Jarell Quansah now looks at a potential move to Bayer Leverkusen.

Separate Deal From Florian Wirtz

Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas has revealed that there are “active negotiations ongoing” as Bayer Leverkusen attempt to sign Quansah. Fabrizio Romano has also stated that “the player has opened doors” to this potential move. This is unsurprising as Quansah played just 488 league minutes in the 2024/25 season, compared to almost 1200 in the campaign prior.

The two clubs are in direct contact for a deal, after already conducting business over Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz this window. Their relationship is clearly very strong, though Liverpool fans should not be worried as Thomas was clear that this “would very much be a separate deal from Wirtz”.

‘Controversial’ Quansah

As mentioned, Quansah struggled this season for minutes and failed to really impress or reach previous heights, in the games which he did play. He was even hooked at half-time against Ipswich, after which he looked visibly frustrated; Slot was blunt with his explanation in an interview, criticising his player for losing too many duels.

However, even off the pitch, he has been called “controversial”, after comments about his teammates. Whether the media spotlight throughout the season has impacted on his performances, or even Slot’s choice of minutes, is unclear.

Are Liverpool Left Short?

Last season, Quansah and fellow back-up centre-back Joe Gomez, played a combined 1007 minutes in the Premier League. There was a heavy reliance on Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, who are deemed one of the best pairings in the world. However, with more and more fixtures, and van Dijk ageing, injuries could certainly occur if rotation is not used.

With Quansah potentially leaving, and Gomez not greatly trusted, Liverpool are left quite short. They appear to be aware of this, given their interest in Dean Huijsen earlier this year. Furthermore, van Dijk will be leaving or retiring at some point in the near future, whilst Konate could be leaving on a free transfer next year to Real Madrid. Letting a talented, young centre-back leave may be a decision that the Reds regret.
