Former Liverpool and Manchester City midfielder Didi Hamann believes the Reds should try and tempt Julian Alvarez back to the Premier League.
The Argentinian international left City for Atletico Madrid last summer but, speaking to Wette.de (quotes via The Express), Hamann said that the Reds could secure Alvarez’s services if they offer to send Darwin Nunez in the other direction:
“I’d love to see Julian Alvarez at Liverpool and I think Darwin Nunez being part of the deal would make a lot of sense. I think Nunez is tailor-made for Atletico Madrid as a physical centre forward, someone who will work so hard which is what Diego Simeone wants.”

“Alvarez would also be a fantastic addition at Liverpool, he played in the shadow of Erling Haaland at Manchester City but really added to his reputation in Madrid. He led the line, scored goals and made life a nuisance for the back lines he played against, I think he would be a brilliant signing.”
“There are whispers about other strikers, but Alvarez would be a fantastic addition to Liverpool and Nunez might just be an even better signing for Atletico.”
Is Alvarez a realistic target?
Both Simeone and Atletico president Enrique Cerezo have spoken out to say that they want to keep the player at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
Although Liverpool’s interest is genuine, it seems very unlikely that they would succeed in offering up Nunez in any potential swap deal. Alvarez was signed for £82m and Atletico would probably value him well in excess of £100m now.
Liverpool are still hopeful of signing Isak
While a move for Alvarez seems far-fetched, the Reds are said to be more optimistic about landing Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
After the Magpies qualified for the Champions League, it was thought that any bid for the Swedish international would be rejected. However, if the player turns down a new contract to remain at St James’ Park, there could be an opening for a deal to happen.
Even then, any transfer would probably require Arne Slot’s side to break their transfer record once again and, to do that, several players would need to be offloaded first.
