Barcelona agrees terms as Luis Diaz transfer situation becomes clear

Barcelona are making big moves in the transfer window — just not the one Liverpool fans feared. The Catalan giants have agreed personal terms with Athletic Club star Nico Williams, putting an end, at least for now, to their chase for Luis Diaz.

For weeks, Diaz’s future has been a talking point. The Colombian winger admitted he’s had talks with other clubs and hasn’t ruled out a move.

With two years left on his current deal at Anfield — the same contract he signed back in 2022 — there’s been some uncertainty. Liverpool, so far, haven’t made any move to extend it. And that left the door just slightly open.

But Barcelona, once thought to be ready to knock, now seem to have walked away.

Nico Williams deal shapes Luis Diaz future

According to Fabrizio Romano, Barca have reached a full agreement with Nico Williams on a six-year deal. The Spanish international is set to earn around €8 million a year — a sign of how serious the club is.

Now, they’re ironing out details with Athletic Club, who will demand the full €58 million release clause.

The Nico move makes sense for Barca. He’s young, dynamic, and gives them the width they’ve lacked. But for Liverpool, this shift in direction might be the real win. With Barcelona busy elsewhere, Diaz is far less likely to leave this summer — unless another club swoops in late.

The Saudi Pro League has been sniffing around, but Diaz has made it clear he’s not forcing anything. “I’m very happy at Liverpool,” he said recently. “If Liverpool renews my contract, or if I have to stay the two years I have left, I’ll be happy. It’s up to them.”

With Arne Slot shaping his squad and Diaz still an important piece, it looks like Anfield will remain home — at least for now. One winger flies to Spain, but another stays grounded on Merseyside.
