Man City hit with punishment after admitting breaching unusual Premier League rule nine times

Manchester City have been hit with a fine after being found guilty of breaching a major Premier League rule on nine occasions. The multi-time English champions are currently facing a potential 130 charges related to financial fair play regulations, with there seemingly being no indication as to when a verdict will be reached or announced.

The potential outcome could have major consequences not only for Pep Guardiola's side, but also for the rest of the Premier League too. However, in a separate case, City have accepted punishment from the Premier League after admitting to breaching one rule several times during the 2024/25 campaign.

Manchester City Fined £800,000 by Premier League

A statement from league officials was released on Thursday

It was revealed on Thursday that the Etihad outfit had been hit with an £800,000 fine for failing to comply with Rule L.33, which states that teams must kick off and restart games in a timely manner or else risk being handed a financial punishment.

Every time a team commits an offence, the cost of the fine increases, with The Sun reporting that City were hit with a £40,000 punishment for their first infringement, and a £190,000 one for their last.

A statement released by the Premier League read:

"The Premier League and Manchester City FC have entered into a sanction agreement after the club accepted it had breached Premier League Rule L.33 in relation to kick-off and re-start obligations. The breaches occurred in nine Premier League matches during the 2024/25 season.

"Rules relating to kick-offs and re-starts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard and provides certainty to fans and participating clubs. It also ensures the broadcast of every Premier League match is kept to schedule."

The first instance of City not co-operating with kick-off times came in the 1-0 victory over Southampton back in October, where they delayed the second half restart by over two minutes. The last one occurred in February as they hammered Newcastle 4-0, delaying the start of the second 45 by 1 minute and 42 seconds.
