Aston Villa transfer chief targeted by former club's potential new owners

The Spanish outfit are currently the subject of a takeover bid and one of the investors, Fede Quintero, has gone public with his ambition to bring Monchi back for a third spell at the club.

Unai Emery was able to convince Monchi to end his second stint two years ago and take the role of president of football operations at Villa, where he has a major say in transfer policy.

The 56-year-old previously worked alongside Emery during his first spell in Seville, where he won wide acclaim for a string of impressive signings.

Quintero and Antonio Lappi are fronting a bid to buy the club and want Monchi back if they are successful.

Speaking to the Spanish press on Thursday, Quintero said: “Sevilla has achieved far more than its own capabilities. Its successes have a lot to do with Monchi, everything to do with him. He’s the most important person in the club’s history.

“He accounts for a large part of the success wherever he goes. We’re seeing it in Birmingham.

“At Roma, they reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2018. When success accompanies you in everything you do, it’s not the success, it’s you.

“I have no idea if he’s going to come back. Yes, I want him back. Antonio Lappí, definitely. I think every Sevilla fan wants him back.”
