Paul Scholes couldn’t believe‘unreal’discipline of underrated Man Utd cult hero, his‘energy’was on another level

Paul Scholes has raved about the incredible ability that he witnessed from one Manchester United cult hero during his time under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

The 50-year-old Manchester United legend called it time on his legendary playing career for the final time at the end of the 2012-13 campaign at Old Trafford.

Paul Scholes initially retired from football in 2011 before the former United midfielder walked back on his decision and returned as a player at Old Trafford in 2012.

The ex-Red Devils star was part of the last United team to lift the Premier League title in 2013 under legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson at the club.

Ferguson bowed out of management after United’s Premier League title win in the 2012-13 season and Scholes also retired from football as a player in 2013.

Scholes was a linchpin midfield influence for former United manager Ferguson and is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders of all time after his prolific career.

Man Utd legend Paul Scholes recalled his experience of playing against Ji-sung Park at Old Trafford

Sir Alex Ferguson brought Manchester United cult hero Ji-sung Park to Old Trafford in 2005 after the Red Devils signed him from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

United reportedly paid £4m for Ji-sung Park and the 44-year-old South Korean former midfielder was a United fan favourite during his time at the club.

Ferguson praised Park as one of his most underrated signings and the former United star famously caused all kinds of problems for Andrea Pirlo when he faced him.

Scholes recalled how difficult it was to play against the former South Korea international in training and Park’s well-known man-marking of Andrea Pirlo.

“Do you know who the worst one was? Park Ji-sung,” he said on the MUTV Group Chat in 2020, as per Manchester United’s official YouTube channel.

“He was a nightmare! He was unbelievable.

“Do you remember when he did it against [Andrea] Pirlo? Ah, he was unreal! He had energy all day and discipline. The discipline was unreal.”

Paul Scholes reveals his hilarious interaction with Man Utd hero Ji-sung Park when he played against him

Ferguson made the decision to play Ji-sung Park as a man-marker on Juventus and AC Milan legend Andrea Pirlo in the Champions League in 2010 to incredible effect.

Scholes admitted that Park was a man of few words and his former teammate could send a message to him about what to expect in training by simply looking at him.

Speaking on Park, he added: “I remember he used to go from the boxes and then over to the possession and as soon as the boxes were finished, he just used to come up to me, look at me and not say a word, stand right next to me… ‘Oh Jesus, here we go!’

“‘Come on, ginge!’ – Just say something to me, have a laugh with me! But he was unbelievable at it.

“He just used to come and stare right into my face, stare right into my eyes. ‘You’re not getting a kick today!’”

Park lifted four Premier League titles, a Champions League and three League Cups under Ferguson before he left United and signed for Queens Park Rangers in 2012.
