The issues with crowd control in England have existed for decades with clubs frequently receiving warnings about the behaviour of their fans off the field.

This has been seen across the Premier League including at Manchester United alongside other clubs.

The Red Devils were themselves condemned by the FA earlier this year for some of the chants that were aimed at Manchester City’s Phil Foden in a derby game.

So it’s an issue that the FA are frequently reviewing and are cracking down on.

Unfortunately, it’s not always possible for clubs to control the behaviour of some of their fans and they have to suffer the consequences.

Such an instance occurred when Tottenham Hotspur played Manchester United in September 2024.

In the game, Spurs fans were alleged to be heard chanting homophobic remarks.

And today, the Football Association (FA) have officially released a statement confirming the matter and issuing the club with a fine.

“Tottenham Hotspur FC has been fined £75,000 for two breaches of FA Rule E21 in relation to crowd control misconduct at its Premier League match against Manchester United FC on Sunday 29 September 2024,” the statement confirms.

“It was alleged that Tottenham Hotspur FC failed to ensure its spectators and or supporters (and anyone purporting to be supporters or followers) conduct themselves in an orderly fashion and don’t use words or otherwise behave in an improper, offensive, abusive, indecent, or insulting way with either an express or implied reference to sexual orientation around both the 49th and 79th minutes.

“Tottenham Hotspur FC admitted both charges, and an independent Regulatory Commission imposed an action plan, £150,000 fine and warning. An independent Appeal Board reduced the fine to £75,000 following an appeal by the club”.

On their site, the FA also shared documentation with written reasons that explains their findings further.

This punishment will arguably now affect Tottenham financially but will instead hurt their reputation. This is something they have to rebuild over the coming months.

The punishment also acts as a warning to all other clubs from across the Premier League and EFL that the FA are serious on crowd control and will crack down on it – even for the slightest of breaks.
