Man United ‘seem to have withdrawn’ their interest in ‘cold assassin' striker

Manchester United have been linked with Canadian striker Jonathan David, who will leave Lille as a free agent this month.

Described as a ‘cold assassin’ by one of his former coaches, Steven Caldwell, David scored 109 goals in 232 games for Lille. He was pivotal in their Ligue 1 triumph in the 2020/2021 season.

His exploits with the French side attracted the interest of United and several other clubs.

However, the Mancunian giants ‘seem to have withdrawn’ their interest in the 25-year-old forward, according to Corriere dello Sport.

Juventus are now well placed to sign David after United, Napoli, Inter Milan, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly withdrew from pursuing his signature.

The Canada international had made United one of his priorities, but the Manchester outfit have turned their attention to other targets.

They made an initial approach to sign Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, but the Swedish striker wants a dream move to Arsenal.

However, the possibility of Gyokeres joining United should not be completely ruled out, as Arsenal are prioritising a move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, who has also been linked with United.

The Red Devils are also in the race to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, valued at €100 million (£85m).

The France youth international scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in the Bundesliga last season to help Frankfurt qualify for the Champions League.

United are the only club in direct talks with Frankfurt about signing Ekitike, but his valuation would make a deal difficult.

Despite links with Juventus star Dusan Vlahovic, journalist Ben Jacobs claims ‘there is nothing advanced’ between the club and the Serbian striker.

A deal for Victor Osimhen also appears unlikely as the Nigeria international is unwilling to reduce his wage demands.
